Leiann Stephenson is the Founder and CEO of Hempress Wellness, a visionary leader with over 30 years of expertise in the Energy and Finance sectors and a decade of experience in the Cannabis industry. Her journey into natural medicine began in 2015, inspired by a personal experience with the healing power of CBD. A year later, she ventured into Oregon’s legal cannabis market by founding The Dub Wholesale, now recognized as the state’s leading cannabis transporter. Beyond her entrepreneurial endeavors, she actively contributes to shaping industry policy through her work with the NCIA Hemp Committee and the CIAO Policy Committee. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Leiann balances her professional achievements with a fulfilling personal life as a mother, grandmother, and proud caretaker of two standard poodles.

From Finance to Founder: The Story of Hempress Wellness

It’s been a little while since I last reached out, and I want to start by saying thank you. To our Hempress family, our community of mindful wellness seekers, and everyone who believes in the power of natural healing, thank you for being on this journey with us. I was recently honored to be a guest on The Green Nurse Podcast, which gave me a chance to share something deeply personal: my journey and the story behind Hempress Wellness.

A Path I Never Expected

Before stepping into the world of hemp and cannabis, I spent more than 30 years in the energy and finance sectors. Those industries taught me discipline, strategic vision, and resilience—skills that would become invaluable in a completely different field. My passion for natural medicine wasn’t planned; it was sparked in 2015 when I witnessed the healing potential of cannabis firsthand through the wellness journey of a close friend, a cancer survivor. Seeing her find pain relief and an improved quality of life opened my eyes to the power of plant medicine. It was a defining moment that made me want to understand the science behind cannabis and its potential to help others.

Not long after, my own experience solidified this new path. A colleague suggested I try a CBD topical roll-on for the muscle and knee pain I was experiencing. Honestly, I didn’t expect much, but the results were undeniable. The roll-on eased my discomfort in a way that felt natural and restorative. That moment shifted my perspective from curiosity to conviction. I knew I had to be part of bringing this kind of relief to others.

Entering the ‘Wild West’ of the Cannabis Industry

My background in finance gave me a strong foundation in business operations, which became essential when I stepped into the emerging cannabis industry. It was anything but predictable. In 2016, I took a leap into what many called the “Wild West” and founded The Dub Wholesale. We had to build everything from scratch: systems, compliance processes, and most importantly, trust. That challenge taught me how to adapt quickly in a rapidly changing environment. The Dub Wholesale has since grown into Oregon’s highest-volume licensed cannabis B2B transporter, and the experience laid the groundwork for my next chapter.

By 2021, my path led me to a new mission. After years in B2B logistics, I wanted to connect directly with consumers. My vision was to create a wellness brand that celebrated integrity, transparency, and empowerment. This became Hempress Wellness, a curated e-commerce marketplace of clean, craft, women-founded CBD brands focused on natural alternatives.
