One of these terms that you might have come across is hemp extract, sometimes even referred to as CBD extract, however, what are they exactly and how are they used? Hemp Extract and CBD Extract
Hemp plants have been around for a while and were used throughout history for making things like paper and textiles. Research has now allowed us to study the medicinal properties of this plant and we have discovered that it contains a number of compounds like CBD, CBG and CBN, all of which can now be extracted.
Out of these, CBD, has the highest concentration and it is currently used in the most number of products. It works by interacting with the receptors in our body’s endocannabinoid system. Hemp extract or CBD extract can contain either CBD or a combination of it with other phytocannabinoids depending on the type of extract. Hemp extract is an umbrella term and it usually includes isolates, broad spectrum extracts, and full spectrum extracts. For example, A CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD out there and contains 99+% CBD. On the other hand, a broad spectrum extract will contain all of the compounds with the exception of THC whereas a full spectrum extract will contain THC (less than 0.3%) as well.
Isolate, Broad-Spectrum or Full-Spectrum?
The particular form of extract that you decide on eventually depends on your needs. For many, isolates are a good option simple because of their versatility. They can be consumed on their own or can be combined with other ingredients to make edibles or topicals. Since a CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, the serving amount is quite easy to figure out. A milligram of isolate powder will translate to one milligram of CBD consumed. It is also a good option for those who wish to avoid THC at all costs.
The two most common types of hemp oil extract are broad-spectrum and full-sectrum. First, we have broad-spectrum extracts. Broad-spectrum or Zero-THC tinctures are ideal for those looking to enjoy the benefits of hemp without any trace of THC. This is important since a lot of people get tested regularly at work. Finally, we have full-spectrum hemp oil extracts. Full-Spectrum extracts are preferred by many because they contain unfiltered hemp extract which includes terpenes and cannabinoids other than CBD. Full-Spectrum tinctures are also CBD-rich. The CBD in these tinctures is enhanced by the rest of the natural compounds found in full-spectrum hemp oil.
